Morning only
Use this when summer rules say you should be done with hard effort by 11 a.m., or when you have a St. George afternoon booked. Arrive near the 6 a.m. opening. Walk Jenny’s Canyon, about 0.5 mile round trip, easy, about the short slot the park recommends for a quick visit. If the group is moving well, add Pioneer Names, also about 0.5 mile round trip and easy, on the way. That pair is a complete morning. Do not start Lava Flow at 10:30 a.m. in July and call it a morning hike. Water still follows the hourly minimum in the heat guide.
One to three hours
Lava Flow fits this window on the park’s own estimate: about 2.5 miles round trip, moderate, about 1.5 hours, on uneven lava. An older brochure figure was about 2.6 miles. Check the hiking page if you need the current number. Petrified Dunes is shorter, about 1.2 miles round trip, and can sit inside the same window with time left for the car. Berm is about 2 miles round trip and about 1 hour, easy, shared with bikes and horses. The full paved Whiptail trail is listed at about 6 miles round trip and about 3 hours, so it is the top of this range only if you actually want three hours of walking. Turn around earlier and it becomes a one-hour outing. Whiterocks at about 4 miles and 2 hours can fit strong hikers. It is a poor choice if anyone is already tired.
Sunset overlook and sightseeing
We did not find a park page that publishes a clock time for sunset or a ranger sunset program, so we are not inventing one. Sunset time changes every month. What the park does publish is a Snow Canyon Scenic Overlook among the exterior lots where your day-use fee is valid, alongside Cinder Cone, Whiterocks, Gila, and Chuckwalla. The park is open until 10 p.m., which covers an evening drive in every season we can think of. In summer, if you arrive late, the park already tells you to take a driving tour and a picnic instead of a hike. That scenic drive is the sunset plan: pay the fee, use the overlook lot if there is space, and do not start a canyon trail in the last hour of light. Know-before-you-go: state parks page.
Pack for whichever version you chose: day-pack loadout. Sample combinations are on plan and hiking. A full one-day and two-day shape is on the itinerary. The morning section above is the short version.
