Snow Canyon State Park asks you to park in designated lots only. That includes the lots inside the canyon and the ones off State Route 18: Cinder Cone, Whiterocks, Gila, Snow Canyon Scenic Overlook, and Chuckwalla. Your day-use fee is valid at those exterior lots too. They are not a free workaround. The rule is on Know Before You Go.
If the canyon lots are full
The park says parking is limited in the canyon, particularly during busy spring and fall periods or holidays. Your pass does not guarantee access or a parking space. We are not adding a count the park does not publish.
The lever you control is arrival time. The gate opens at 6 a.m. A holiday afternoon in the peak months is the lot the park is warning you about. If the main canyon lots are tight, use a designated exterior lot that matches the trail, not the shoulder. Whiterocks, Cinder Cone, Gila, Chuckwalla, and the scenic overlook are the SR-18 names the park prints. Read current conditions in case a lot is closed. Crowd timing, without invented visitor counts, is on avoid crowds.
Oversized vehicles are not every lot. The park says these lots accommodate buses: Chuckwalla, Padre/Johnson Canyon, Sand Dunes Picnic, Campground, Upper Galoot Picnic, and Gila. An educator handout names a slightly different bus list. If you are in a bus or a very long RV, call the park at 435-628-2255 before you assume a space.
Trailheads the park names
These access points are from the hiking page. We are not guessing which stall is closest to the sign.
- Jenny’s Canyon trailhead for Jenny’s Canyon.
- Pioneer Names trailhead. The park says this trail has two access points along Snow Canyon Drive.
- Lava Flow trailhead for Lava Flow.
- Petrified Dunes / Butterfly trailhead. Petrified Dunes can also be reached from Whiptail or the Upper Galoot parking lot.
- Upper Galoot parking lot for the paved Whiptail trail and for Tortoise Walk, which starts in the Upper Galoot picnic area.
- Sand Dunes picnic area for Sand Dunes and for West Canyon Road. The park also notes a small roadside lot for a shorter way onto the dunes.
- Hidden Pinyon trailhead or the campground picnic area for Hidden Pinyon.
- Whiterocks trailhead via Whiterocks Road, off Highway 18, for Whiterocks. That is an exterior lot, not a canyon-road stall.
- Cinder Cone trailhead on Diamond Valley Drive.
- Berm trailhead at 100 E in Ivins, and the Toe trailhead on Snow Canyon Drive or Tuacahn Drive. Those sit toward the south end, not in the middle of the scenic drive.
- Scout Cave trailhead, across the street from its parking lot. Johnson Canyon shares the first part of that route and is closed March 15 through September 14 except by ranger-guided hike.
The visitor center is in the campground, about two miles in from either entrance on Snow Canyon Drive. It is not a trailhead for every hike. Sample days that use these lots are on the one-day and two-day plan.
