Snow Canyon is on the Utah State Parks list of certified dark sky parks, and the park page calls it a designated Urban Night Sky Place. That is a real designation, and it is also an honest one: the park sits right next to Ivins and St. George, so expect some town glow on the horizon rather than a remote-desert sky.

The clock is the main rule

Day-use hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, year-round, per the park page and the September 2026 brochure. Plan any evening stargazing so that you are back in the car and out before 10 p.m. In June and July full darkness arrives late, which leaves only a short window before the close. Fall and winter evenings get dark earlier, which is when a casual star walk fits best.

Staying overnight

Camping is allowed only in the designated campground, and backcountry camping is not permitted. The camping page lists quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and a 14-night maximum stay. Reservations open up to four months ahead and close two days before arrival; after that, unreserved sites are first-come, first-served. We did not find an official statement about where campers may walk after 10 p.m., so we are not suggesting late-night trail walks. Ask the visitor center if that matters to your plan.

What to bring

Some links on this page earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

  • Warm layers and a chair or blanket. Utah State Parks suggests these for its star events.
  • A red-light flashlight, if you have one. It keeps your night vision.
  • A headlamp for the walk back to the car. Lava Flow trail guides already say to bring flashlights for the lava tubes, and glow sticks are not allowed there.
  • Water, even at night. The heat rules on our heat plan still apply on summer evenings.

Ranger programs

Utah State Parks runs dark-sky events such as star parties and full-moon walks at participating parks. Which events Snow Canyon is holding this season is on the park’s event calendar, not on this site. We do not sell seats for them, and we are not the park.

Stay on mapped trails at night the same as by day. The park is part of the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve and allows hiking only on designated, mapped trails.

Quick FAQ

Is Snow Canyon a dark sky park?

Utah State Parks lists it among its certified dark sky parks, and the park page calls it a designated Urban Night Sky Place.

Can I stay after 10 p.m. to stargaze?

Day-use hours end at 10 p.m. The only overnight option the park lists is the designated campground. We did not find an official rule for campers walking trails after 10 p.m., so ask the park.

When is the best season for an evening sky walk?

Fall and winter, because it gets dark earlier and there is more time before the 10 p.m. close. Always check current conditions first.
