Print this page or save it as a PDF. Checkboxes print as empty boxes. The product picks are on the day-pack loadout; this page is just the list.

Before you leave town

• Read current conditions and closures (Johnson Canyon is closed Mar 15–Sep 14 except ranger-guided hikes)
• Check the forecast for heat or flash-flood risk (monsoon season is typically July–September)
• Download or print the park trail map — cell service is unreliable
• Tell someone your trail and return time
• Plan to be off trail by 11 a.m. in summer
• Day-use fee ready (cash, card, or contactless)

Day pack

• Water: at least 32 oz (1 liter) per person, per hour — everyone carries their own
• Salty snacks
• Hat and sunscreen
• Sturdy shoes
• Trail map
• First aid kit
• Flashlight or headlamp (needed for the lava tubes; no glow sticks)
• Safety whistle
• Long-sleeve sun layer
• Leash (6 ft max) and waste bags, if a dog is coming

At the trailhead

• Park in a designated lot only
• Stay on mapped trails; scramble only at Galoot Hill, Petrified Dunes, or Whiterocks
• Turn around when the first person is done or the water is half gone
